Every Never Is Now! On Thursday, March 11, SPACE made a play for our recent “Best Hip Hop Venue” nomination with a sold out night featuring 4 excellent artists. A late addition to the bill, F. Stokes started things hard with a short set that quickly won over the growing crowd. Astronautalis (Portland really seems to love him, rightfully so) was up second and put all the energy of a headlining slot into it. Her first time at SPACE, Dessa‘s set was highly anticipated and showed the enraptured crowd just why she’s been getting so much good press lately. Finally, P.O.S. closed out the show with a strong set, featuring guest spots by the openers. There was a great energy in the room all night, and it didn’t stop there. After the show, local rappers kept it going out on the street with a battle, and even P.O.S., Astronautalis, and our own Sontiago got in on it.

Photo Recap: 48 Hour Music Festival [3.6.10]

Once again, Leif Sherman Curtis brought together 26 musicians to form 6 new bands over a 48 hour period. What were the results? Another epic show full of surprises, new music, and a lot of fun. Meet Clöven Dözer (Kat Hulit-fronted spookiness in all its glory), Roy G Biv (my pick for best new band of the project – a bit like Dilly Dilly if she listened to a lot of Blonde Redhead), Jefferson Slaveship (fulfilling the potentially offensive name quota for this year), Eric Brackett Music Group (the shredding oboe leads made it pretty psychedelic), Vaxxene (Gina Brown is unstoppable), and Sister-ita (the only band out of the project thus far that could almost be called New Wave).

On Saturday, February 27 we had a unique Middle Eastern Night here at SPACE. The night began with an impressive performance by Alhan Middle Eastern Music Ensemble before picking things up with the high-energy music played by The Shavarsh Kef Ensemble. On Saturday, February 13, we had our 4th Annual Dead Of Winter show. This experiment involves taking songwriters out of their element (bands) and seeing what they do on their own or with new collaborators. This year’s performers were José Ayerve (Spouse), Eric Schwan (Orchards), Randy Illian (Tin Ceilings), Jeremy Alexander (An Evening With), Aly Spaltro (Lady Lamb the Beekeeper), Jacob Augustine, Darien Brahms, Matthew Lajoie (Cursillistas), Peet Chamberlain, Tim Findlen (Over A Cardboard Sea), Emily Dix Thomas, D. On February 1 we held two shows at SPACE. The first, an earlier, suggested-donation event with bands on the floor included Planets Around The Sun, Peace, Loving, Theodore Treehouse, and Prince Rama Of Ayodhya. The later show – for which much of the earlier crowd returned – was guitar virtuoso James Blackshaw and folk songwriter Gary Higgins (highly recommended for fans of SPACE-favorite Lewis & Clarke). Treble Treble Is Out Now! Compilation + Book Release Party Photos

As you may have heard, local musician and photographer Joshua Loring and SPACE Gallery were awarded a grant by the Maine Arts Commission to document the underground rock scene in Portland, Maine. The result of this project is a compilation cd (wonderfully mastered by Pete Nenortas) and book (lovingly designed by Sean Wilkinson) covering a unique spectrum of the music happening here in our local scene. This is now available, in the form of Treble Treble Volume 1, at SPACE as well as Bull Moose Music (in Portland and Scarborough) and Newbury Comics (in South Portland). You can preview all ten tracks on the disc and get more info here.

On November 27th, 2009, we held a special release party for Treble Treble and had a number of the musicians involved in the project perform, including Gully, An Evening With, Huak, Metal Feathers, Vince Nez, Tempera, and Leif Sherman Curtis. We’ll be continuing this project right here at Have Faith In Worthless Knowledge with more tracks from the bands in Volume 1 as well as others as we continue to explore Portland’s music scene. Expect to hear more in the new year…
