On January 28 we closed out an excellent 5-year run of our Dead Of Winter annual concert, as conceived by Ian Paige and Joshua loring, with the Death Of Dead Of Winter. This local star-studded night featured musical performances from Tyler Jackson (Foam Castles), Samuel James, Aleric Nez, Kelly Nesbitt, Jay Lobley (Metal Feathers), Sean Morin, Leif Sherman-Curtis (AOK Suicide Forest), JD Walker and Sontiago, and Emily Dix Thomas, plus perfectly atmospheric live electronic ambience by 14-year-old wunderkind Leander Johnson, an explosive cabin fever performance by Crank Sturgeon, a reading by Mayor Nick Mavodones, and a video byTJ Metcalfe (Dead Man’s Clothes), all topped off with drinking-on-comman by Sean Wilkinson.

Going into the night we knew this show was going to be big. Deer Tick had to cancel their appearance at SPACE last time around, so there were a lot of fans anxious (a sold out crowd of 300 to be exact) to see the band back in Portland. The last minute addition of Diamond Doves (otherwise known as half of Elvis Perkins in Dearland‘s band) filled out an already big bill which included locals Tiger Saw opening.

Before the show, tour openers Those Darlins did an interview with local writer Katie Fuller, which can be found on the blog Pop Tarts Suck Toasted here (along with some of my photos from the night). Check out the sweet bling Jessi Darlin got out of our Art-o-Mat!

Every Never Is Now! On Thursday, March 11, SPACE made a play for our recent “Best Hip Hop Venue” nomination with a sold out night featuring 4 excellent artists. A late addition to the bill, F. Stokes started things hard with a short set that quickly won over the growing crowd. Astronautalis (Portland really seems to love him, rightfully so) was up second and put all the energy of a headlining slot into it. Her first time at SPACE, Dessa‘s set was highly anticipated and showed the enraptured crowd just why she’s been getting so much good press lately. Finally, P.O.S. closed out the show with a strong set, featuring guest spots by the openers. There was a great energy in the room all night, and it didn’t stop there. After the show, local rappers kept it going out on the street with a battle, and even P.O.S., Astronautalis, and our own Sontiago got in on it.
