Dead Of Winter, Done In

On January 28 we closed out an excellent 5-year run of our Dead Of Winter annual concert, as conceived by Ian Paige and Joshua loring, with the Death Of Dead Of Winter. This local star-studded night featured musical performances from Tyler Jackson (Foam Castles), Samuel James, Aleric Nez, Kelly Nesbitt, Jay Lobley (Metal Feathers), Sean Morin, Leif Sherman-Curtis (AOK Suicide Forest), JD Walker and Sontiago, and Emily Dix Thomas, plus perfectly atmospheric live electronic ambience by 14-year-old wunderkind Leander Johnson, an explosive cabin fever performance by Crank Sturgeon, a reading by Mayor Nick Mavodones, and a video byTJ Metcalfe (Dead Man’s Clothes), all topped off with drinking-on-comman by Sean Wilkinson.

Photo Recap: 48 Hour Music Festival [3.6.10]

Once again, Leif Sherman Curtis brought together 26 musicians to form 6 new bands over a 48 hour period. What were the results? Another epic show full of surprises, new music, and a lot of fun. Meet Clöven Dözer (Kat Hulit-fronted spookiness in all its glory), Roy G Biv (my pick for best new band of the project – a bit like Dilly Dilly if she listened to a lot of Blonde Redhead), Jefferson Slaveship (fulfilling the potentially offensive name quota for this year), Eric Brackett Music Group (the shredding oboe leads made it pretty psychedelic), Vaxxene (Gina Brown is unstoppable), and Sister-ita (the only band out of the project thus far that could almost be called New Wave).

For something with a name that causes so much confusion, Pecha Kucha certainly is an overwhelmingly popular event. Basically, it’s an international event at which designers and creators of all sorts come together to share their work (20 slides, 20 seconds each) with an audience. The Portland event has a site here where you can find out about their upcoming events and view photos and videos from the presentations. On February 25, the 11th Portland event was held at SPACE and including Xnip, Doug Hall Photography, Masey Kaplan, The Sunday Best, a Dave Poole tribute, Willard Beach TV, architect Todd Richardson, Tom Newhall, (SPACE’s own) Aaron Flacke, and food sculpture by Evan Carroll & Sasha Salzberg. Photos: 48 Hour Music Fest [February 21]

Once again, the Hometown Heroes series at SPACE Gallery was a great moment in local music. The 48 Hour Music Fest on Saturday was an experiment that brought together musicians from all corners of the Portland scene, pairing them up in new combinations and challenging these temporary bands to prepare full sets of music in just two days.

Ok, Who Spiked The Punch?

The truth is, we didn’t have punch at the SPACE Homecoming Dance on Saturday. The oversized crystal bowls we were going to serve it in simply would have taken up too much room on the dancefloor. See?

All the photos in the post were taken by Sam Cousins. Read on for more!

The first band of the night was the fantastic Joshua Loring Quartet, more commonly known in their previous (and far-less cover song-inclined) incarnation as Cult Maze. Their selection of rockin’ classic dance jams had the whole place singing along and dancing.

The outfits were just great all throughout the night, as you’ll see soon when we get the photobooth photos up! Spencer Albee and the School Spirit Mafia kept it classy with more great songs and then the party got even wilder, as half the crowd got onstage to dance the rest of the night away.

And finally, our wonderful staff who were working hard to make the night extra awesome.

Bonus! Here’s a clip of The Joshua Loring Quartet doing the Elvis classic, “Suspicious Minds” – pretty much the only thing I captured with my camera that evening, since I was too busy dancing. Thanks, Sam!
